Unknown distance and time at Lake Chabot. Instead of going on the Lake Loop like normal people, we hiked uphill both ways on a path in the middle of nowhere. There was also a lot of learning about navigation, plants, and first aid.
Reports
The first thing we did when we got to Chabot park was we falled in, checked our uniforms, made announcements, and introduced our two new scouts. We then started our hike, our scoutmaster and assistant scoutmaster told us to look for and identify different types of plants like poison ivy, poison oak, and some plant you can eat that contains water. When we reached one of the hilltops our scoutmaster and assistant scoutmaster told us to find out where the north, south, west, and east were. They explained to us a little about how to find out where the directions were. Then we hiked to the tallest point we got to during this hike. Our assistant scoutmaster then showed us what we should carry in our backpacks during a hike or when going camping. Things he showed us were a flashlight, compass, first aid kits, scissors, thermometer, water bottle, pocketknife, and other stuff. We then hiked down to a place with benches. There we were told to tie our neckerchiefs using the butterfly knot. Our assistant scoutmaster then taught us how to carry wounded people in different scenarios either using 1, 2, or 3 people to carry the wounded person using different techniques. Then our assistant scoutmaster told us to tie ropes but we didn't have time. This concludes my report for the 11/13 hike at Lake Chabot park.
So on the 11/13 I got there at 10 we started when everyone met up at around 10:15 we falled in and did a uniform check, made some announcements, and introduced three new scouts. We started our hike and were told to look around at the types of plants leaves and any other types of things like that. During that time I learned that there is a plant where you can eat and contains water in it. When we reached the top of the hill we were teached on how to find north, east, south, west. We also talked about what should be in a first aid kit and other things you should bring for camping or hiking. We got back to around where we started and we tied our neckerchiefs using a butterfly knot. Furthermore, we learned about how to carry a person if they get injured or have issues with walking. Lastly we were taught a little on how to tie ropes but because we had limited time we didn't get to that point. Overall I think that this hike was very educational and for the new scouts too.
On 11/13 we went to chabot and everyone went there around 10. We were outside and got introduced to some new scouts. After that we went in and we got taught which poison ivy and poison oak. We also learned that there is a plant that you can eat. After learning that we went higher we learned how to figure out which way is north, south, east, west without a compass, which is pretty useful. After that we were taught what is in the first aid kit and what to do in what situation with what first aid kit. That it was very helpful because they can help you or someone that is hurt or injured, especially when you are outdoors. After that we went down and were at a picnic table. We tied a butterfly knot with our handkerchief. After that we learned how to carry someone if they are not awake. After that we learned how to carry someone if they are injured with some amount of people. That took most of the time away and didn't get to tie the ropes. I would say it was pretty good, since they were mostly helpful things to learn and you know what to do if these things happen to you.
On November 13, the troop gathered near the parking lot of Chabot park. All the Scouts all had to fall in and then the scouts were introduced to the new scouts who were joining to troop. After that everyone started the hike. While hiking, the scouts were told to try to identify poison ivy. After hiking for a while the scouts then stopped to learn how to find North, South, East, & West without using a compass. The trick was to use the Sun's orientation to find East and then the other directions. Then everyone walked to the top of the hill where [leader] showed everyone what items to bring on a camp or hike and what the uses for them were. [leader] laid out items like a knife, flashlight items from a first aid kit and other tools. [leader] told everyone what situations that would need each item in and how to use each item. After that everyone started walking down the hill to some benches and a small field. The scouts had to tie a butterfly knot with their handkerchief without help. Then the scouts were taught how to safely transport an injured person by themselves or with partners. The scouts had to carry another scout over their shoulders across the small field. Then the scouts were taught to tie poles and ropes together to make an A-Frame to carry an injure person. After that the scouts were shown how to tie all the poles back together. Then all the scouts dismissed.
The day was a special one, we drove to the chabot parking lot and paid the entry fee. We walked up the hill to get into formation to break off to start hiking. We were introduced to new scouts on the day. We went on the hike to learn and watch out for poison ivy and went through a different trail. We walked up and got a good view of the lake. We learned about how to find your direction without a compass. We continued to walk up and on the peak of the mountain [leader] pulled out some stuff like a first aid kit and other useful tools for survival. He then taught us how to use them in situations. We then finished our hike and started to carry each other in case of injury. Then we learned other ways to carry injured people with sticks. Finally, we ended our day with a fall out.
