Safe knife use
- Keep blades closed except when using or cleaning
- Only one blade open at a time
- Cut away from self
- Close blades before passing knife to someone else
- Keep knife sharp
- Obey regulations for carrying knives in public
- Never carry knife with blade open
- Never throw knife
- Never strike knife with another tool
- Don't use blade for prying
Cleaning: open all blades. Wrap cloth around toothpic, moisten cloth, and wipe the inside of the knife. If knife has touched food wash the knife in hot, soapy water and apply light oil after.
Sharpening: hold knife against whetstone at an angle of around 25 degrees. Push blade along the stone, keepinging a consistent angle. Sharpen other side. Check sharpness by confirming there is no reflection from the sun on the edge of the blade.
Saw
Safe saw use
- Sheath saw when not used
- Carry saw with blade turned away
- Replace dull blades
- Put saw down, let other person pick it up
- Use gloves and protective eyewear
- Don't cut trees and branches without permission
- Don't cut into the ground
- Don't leave saw lying around
Cutting branches: make an undercut, then saw from the top down.
Cutting saplings: cut level to the ground and don't create stumps
Cutting loose pieces of wood: brace wood against a chopping block, sawhorse, or other solid support. Use long, smooth strokes.
Other stuff:
- Use a sheath
- Close folding saws when unused
- Replace saw blades when dull
- Bring spare blade if there is a lot of cutting to do
Ax
Safe ax use
- Make sure head is tight, blade is sharp, and handle is undamaged
- Wear boots, protective eyewear, and gloves
- Make sure there is another space around you
- Move people at least 10 feet away
- Get feet set and body balanced. Stay relaxed, pay attention.
- Know what you're doing
- Use sheath when not used
- Carry with hand on top of the handle near the head with blade turned away
- If you fall, throw ax away as you fall
- Never carry an ax on your shoulder
- Give ax to another person by holding the handle with ax facing down. Release only when the other person says 'thank you'.
